Petaluma Flashbacks
The next few blogs will be "Petaluma flashbacks". They may not be completely accurate but will be close and fun. OK, here we go. This blogger and his then wife came to town in 1971. I was "hippied to the max"...long hair, beard, black stove pipe hat...you got the visual. We drove into town in my black 1959 220a Mercedes and went to a real estate office to see if there might be any rentals available. We met a realtor ( I love how Californians say RE-LIT-OR ) by the name
of Cliff Asbell. Cliff was a realtor by day and a ... I couldn't possibly make this up ... chicken sexor by night. (ok ... I wasn't sure how to spell "sexor/ sexer") so I called Petaluma Poultry Processors just now and explained my problem..."how does one spell sexor?" After speaking with 4 different experts, (sexperts? ) who by the way thought I was kidding, Mat, the general manager, admitted that he wasn't sure. He informed me that that procedure is only done on turkeys these days. Hmmm ... DOES ANYONE KNOW FOR SURE ???
So ... back to my story. Cliff informed us that no rentals were to found, but if we were interested, we could look at a cute little Victorian that was for sale on Keokuk Street. We looked, we loved and we bought for $22,000. The home came with 2 cats, sisters, and 3 6-ft.
newly planted redwood trees. Those trees today have taken over the corner of Keokuk and Galland streets. Now 37 years later, they must be 70 or 80 feet tall !! The home, however, is still the same size and just as cute today ! We lived in that cute little home for 2 years. At that time, I was playing with the rock band Cold Blood. The late Bill Graham was our manager and we were on the Warner Bros. label. The band traveled extensively and I was gone on each tour for weeks at a time. I couldn't WAIT to return to our sweet little home on Keokuk Street.
There will be Oh So Much more in the next blogs !!
SEXOR ? SEXER ?

Comment: It is "sexer." They sex the birds three ways, either vent sexing, feather sexing, or by color. This can be done on chickens, but vent sexing is the only way it is done on turkeys. You can't use feather sexing or color sexing with turkeys, only chickens. As far as not being done on chickens, it just depends on who you grow for. Some companies do what is called straight run where they don't sex them. Others will sex them so they can separate out the boys and girls because they will leave the boys out there longer to get a bigger bird for a different market. And if they are like chickens my sister, a DVM, grows they only want the girls for egg production. With breeders you sex them because you only want 1 male to every 12 females.
