Chicken "sexer"

Ok, ok ... I know that it has been awhile since I last blogged ... (what a funny word !) My beautiful wife Carole and I just spent a fabulous 10 days in Mexico. It was our "delayed honeymoon" and our 1-year anniversary.
San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato are wonderful towns. My band was one of 5 headlining bands featured in the 14th annual Festival Internacional in San Miguel. But .. .this blog is about our lovely town, Petaluma.
When I last blogged, I was flashing back to my initial arrival in Petaluma ... the purchase of our little Victorian on Keokuk Street from a realtor who was a chicken SEXER by night.
In my last blog I asked for help on the correct spelling of "sexer / sexor." Lo and behold, a reader sent the following description to me.

"It is "sexer". They sex the birds 3 ways, either vent sexing, feather sexing or by color. This can be done on chickens, but vent sexing is the only way it is done on turkeys. You can't use feather sexing or color sexing with turkeys, only chickens. As far as not being done on chickens, it just depends on who you grow for. Some companies do what is called "straight run," where they don't sex them. Others will sex them so they can separate out the boys and girls because they will leave the boys out there longer to get a bigger bird for a different market. And if they are like chickens, which my sister, a DVM grows, they only want girls for egg production. With breeders, you sex them because you only want 1 male to every 12 females."

SO THERE !!!!!!!!!
I am back into the blogging groove. More on my "flashbacks of Petaluma" soon.
